The Owl Babies Visit Wrens. Friday 25th September 2026

We have had another lovely week in Wrens and have started our more formal learning for Literacy now too!

In Phonics this week we learnt the phonemes (sounds) for the graphemes (letters) i, n, m and d. You may have noticed that your child has now come home with a reading book with words in it. Please ensure that you are reading regularly with your child as this helps them to revisit and practise the sounds that we have been learning in phonics. It also helps them with their writing. Please also record when you read with your child in their reading logs.

In Maths this week we have been practising our counting skills. Ted the puppet helped us to count, although the children found it very funny when he kept making mistakes! Everyone did a great job at explaining to Ted what he did wrong and we helped Ted to count objects accurately.

In Drawing Club this week our text focus has been Owl Babies. As a class we wrote a sentence about how the owl babies felt at different points in the story and then working in small groups, we wrote initial sounds for feelings in our new Drawing Club books. I am so proud of how well the children are engaging with their writing as this is a tricky skill to master this early in the year.

In Art this week we made collage owls using feathers, buttons, foam and cotton wool. The children thought really carefully about what materials they wanted to use and where they wanted to put them. Our in-class art gallery is looking very colourful.

Following on from our Owl Babies theme, in our outdoor learning session this week we collected different materials to make our own owl baby nests. Working together as a class we created a giant nest on the field.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend,
Mrs Chattey
