Equality Objectives

At Pirton School we believe that diversity is a strength, which should be respected and celebrated by all those who learn, teach and visit here. We are committed to ensuring a high equality of education and opportunity for all pupils. Inclusion at Pirton School is about providing equality and excellence for all in order to promote the highest possible standards of achievement. It also ensures that we recognise and celebrate the differences that exist amongst us, that we treat all people fairly and that we strive to eliminate discrimination wherever it exists. This is a whole school policy – equality applies to all members of the school community: pupils, staff, governors, parents and community members.

Pirton School is committed to ensuring equality of provision throughout the school community.  To achieve this our equality objectives 2020-2024 are as follows:

Equality Objective 1

Over the next four years the school curriculum will be developed to reflect the diverse world we live in, with improved provision in all subjects to promote inclusion and acknowledgment of groups of diversity.

Why have we chosen this objective?

Through pupil voice and staff discussion, it has been become clear that the curriculum did not always reflect the differences in our wider community.  We feel, as part of our aims and school vision, that our intended curriculum demonstrates the importance of equality and diversity and our pupils’ role in pursuing this now and in the future.   Developing the Pirton School Curriculum, provided a valuable opportunity to explore diversity through a new lens and enrich the experiences of pupils through a broad and balanced curriculum that is available to all.

Equality Objective 2

Over the next four years the attendance of disadvantaged pupils and pupils with SEND will improve year on year and by July 2023 to be in line with the national school attendance figure or higher.

Why have we chosen this objective?

In past years the attendance of pupils and those with SEND has been lower than other pupils. Reasons for low attendance can be complex, however, individual pupils are disadvantaged if due to poor attendance they receive less education than their peers.  Individual families can be supported to ensure disadvantages pupils attend school regularly and benefit from first quality teaching as well as the wider curriculum.

Equality Objective 3

For the range of extra-curricular activities on offer to be adequately diverse to attract equal numbers of boys and girls and the same proportions of disadvantaged pupils and pupils with SEND that are found across the school.

Why have we chosen this objective?

We offer a range of extra-curricular activities for pupils to attend within and just after school time.  We believe these contribute to a child’s development and are of educational value.  We want to ensure that all pupils can benefit from participating in a club or activity and that the range on offer is diverse enough and accessible enough to encourage participation from all.
