This week in Swifts, we have been celebrating British Science Week, focusing on the theme of ‘Change and Adapt.’
The children explored various scientific concepts and engaged in hands-on activities to enhance their understanding. On Monday, they estimated and read measurements of volume and capacity, while also completing a British Science Week reading comprehension. Additionally, they identified issues related to the use of materials and sustainability, designing inventions to reuse materials instead of discarding them, tying this in with their Science topic on the ‘Uses of Materials’.
On Tuesday, using Explorify, the children discussed the environmental impact of landfills and reflected on the question, ‘What if there was no plastic?’ They shared their positive and negative thoughts on the topic, whilst also including alternative options to reduce the size and amount of landfills.
Wednesday began with a whole-school British Science Week assembly, where children in each year group shared their British Science Week learning so far. Later on, Swifts played a fun ‘What am I?’ science-themed riddle game, linking each item to scientific concepts.
On Thursday, the children created Science Week posters based on the theme of “Change and Adapt,” which they entered into the British Science Week competition.
Finally, on Friday, the children combined their Science and Maths learning by investigating which room in the school is the warmest. They took and recorded measurements for accuracy, drawing conclusions that the kitchen was the warmest and the hall the coldest—although this may have been due to the door being left open!
