This week in Kestrels, the children have been learning how to ‘show, not tell’ emotions in their writing. To help them understand this skill, we explored how characters communicate feelings through body language, gestures, and facial expressions rather than using direct emotion words. The children practised this through drama activities, using Kevin the Koala from The Koala Who Could as their inspiration. We focused on the moment when Kevin’s tree is being cut down, and the children worked brilliantly to demonstrate Kevin’s fear and anxiousness through movement and expression. They did a fantastic job bringing his emotions to life without ever saying the words themselves!
