This week in Science, Swifts learned about microhabitats. They started by naming animals that live in different microhabitats, like worms under logs, woodlice under stones and spiders in bushes. The children talked about large habitats near them, such as gardens, woodlands and parks. They found out that these big habitats contain smaller areas called microhabitats, which have different living and non-living things. The class then went outside to explore the school grounds and discover different microhabitats. They described different microhabitats and picked one to look at more closely. Using pots, magnifying glasses and spotting sheets, they carefully observed, collected and identified the animals they found. They gently studied the invertebrates before putting them back safely where they belonged.
