Science – 1st October – Making heart and blood models

In Science, Owls are learning about the Circulatory System. Today’s lesson aimed to help them to consolidate their understanding of how a heart works and to help them to learn the four main components of blood: plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets.  We had great fun creating a model of blood, using syrupy water for the plasma, cheerios dyed with red food colouring for the red blood cells, white rice for the white blood cells and porridge oats for the platelets.  We then created model hearts by stretching a balloon over the cup of ‘blood’ and inserting two straws (one with the end sealed) so that when we pushed on the balloon, it created a pumping effect. Hopefully we created lasting memories that will help them with their learning through the rest of the topic.
