What a lovely week of sunshine we have had in Wrens! We have all really enjoyed exploring our outdoor area this week and I have seen some fantastic independent application of the skills we have taught the children in our Adult Led learning outside during child initiated learning.
In Phonics this week we have been looking at the graphemes oi, ow and er. The children are becoming much more confident with these phase 3 digraphs. We have also introduced Alien words in Reception. These are nonsense or made up words. When the children move into Year 1 they will take part in the Phonics Screening check where they will read 20 real words and 20 alien words. Wrens have been fantastic at spotting these non-words and then have been able to read them fantastically when they apply their phonic knowledge.
In Maths this week we have been looking at addition and subtraction. Wrens are fantastic at articulating their mathematical thinking, especially when using tens frames. To challenge the Reception children, we have introduced the symbols for addition, subtraction and equals and some children are able to write their mathematical calculations using number sentences.
In Drawing club this week our text focus has been The Gruffalo. We have done some fantastic independent writing and we particularly enjoyed our Outdoor Learning lesson during Welly Wednesday where we used natural resources – including mud!- to create our own Gruffalos.
I hope you all have a lovely weekend,
Mrs Chattey
